Your
URL (Web Site Address)
Use keywords in the URL, in other words http://www.domain.com/realestate.
Search engines give more weight to a
name like www.realtors.com/realestate.htm
than www.mypage.com/page.htm.
Make it a
habit to include keywords in all your sub pages where you
can. Separate keywords with a dash,
underscore or a slash, e.g.,
www.domain.com/golf-clubs.htm.
Robots and spiders cannot differentiate between
attached words.
Get your own domain name.
This gives your site more credibility than user
pages on an ISP, and some search engines take this
into account. You might want to get your own
domain name for no other reason than portability. If
you ever need to change hosts and you do not have your own
domain name you have to change your web
address! It would be a shame to build up your traffic
and then lose it because you can not keep your web address.
Having your own domain name costs $70
for the first two years. After that it is $35
a year. You can check the availability of a domain name at Vanitywebs.Net.
If you would like some help in coming up with a
domain name, here is a nifty little
tool called Smart
Domain Lookup that can devise name
combinations for you.
Reviewed
Sites
Getting your web site reviewed by a search engine can have a
positive impact on your ranking in search results. Some
search engines provide top ranking for a web
site that has been found to provide valuable information.
Note:
The majority of search engines that review sites do so in
their separate
channel or directory areas.
Link
Tags
Some search engines weigh the text within a LINK more
heavily than words found in the regular body
text. Therefore, use keywords within the link portion
of your href tags>
Example:<A HREF="pagename.htm">keyword
phrase</A>
Don’t forget to name the page with a
keyword phrase as well. Separate multiple
keywords with a dash such as golf-clubs.htm as opposed to
golfclubs.
Update
Your Web Site
Your web site’s position on search engines can be
influenced by the frequency of page updates. The search
engine’s spider is capable of determining how often you
make changes and will give you a higher position in the list
if you make frequent updates. (At least every other month)
You can resubmit your web site when you have made
changes.
WARNING!!
If your web site already has a great ranking on a search
engine, do NOT resubmit your site. The search engine
algorithm might have changed and you could actually drop in
the rankings.
Header
Tags
Put your keyword phrases in Header Tags not Font
Tags. Headings are the larger print, or
subtitles on a page. Search engines often consider header
text to be particularly important.
Example: <H1> Commercial
Real Estate Pennsylvania</H1>
You should make your first header tag the same as your title
if possible.
Informative
Web Site
Developing a web site that talks about your product
or service is fine, but providing additional
useful information is even better! For example, a company
that sells clothing accessories wants to develop a
web site. They have great products, but so do
a lot of other sites. By providing additional useful content
like how to match accessories or how to tie a scarf,
they will have an advantage over the
competition. Why? More sites will link to you and the
more the number of sites that link
to you, the higher your web site placement
in the search engines. It takes time to get noticed,
but eventually those sites that provide good, useful content
in an organized fashion, will have the visitors in the end.

Some companies are filtering out web sites that can
be accessed from a desktop. What this means
is if your web site does not have a rating, it can not
be viewed in some cases. Can you imagine your web site being
blacked out from being viewed by a large
corporation!
